How do I fill line item quantities from a project's measurements?

Link a catalog item to a measurement, or pick one on a line, and the quantity fills in the unit you buy the item in.

Link a catalog item to one of your measurements, or choose Fill from measurement on a line, and the quantity fills in for you, converted to the unit you buy the item in.

Tell the item how its units convert

Open the item in Products. Under Unit conversion, write the equation the way your supplier sells it, for example 1 Box = 12 Square Foot. Both numbers can be edited, so you never have to type a repeating decimal.

Under Fill quantity from, choose the measurement this item is always bought against, such as floor area. A measurement becomes available once the item has a conversion that reaches its unit.

From then on, adding the item to an estimate, an order or a template fills its quantity from that measurement. You can still type over any single line.

Fill one line by hand

Open a line's menu and choose Fill from measurement. Pick the measurement set, then the measurement. You can also type # in the Calc column to search the document's measurements.

Choosing a measurement set

When a project has one set of measurements, new estimates and orders use it automatically. When it has more than one, you choose the set when you create the document.

Things to know

  • Measurements update live while a document is open. Lines already filled keep their quantity until you edit them.
  • If a document has no number for a measurement a line uses, that line shows 0 so you can spot it.
  • Material orders round items sold by the each, box, roll or bundle up to a whole number. Estimates keep the exact amount.
  • To change a measurement, edit it in the project's Measurements.
